The Statue of Liberty The Statue of Liberty is one of the most famous landmarks in the world. It is on Liberty Island in New York Harbor, USA. France gave this statue to the United States to celebrate 100 years of American independence. A man named Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi designed it, and it was finished in 1886. The statue is made of copper. At first, it was brown, but over time, it turned green because of the weather. The Statue of Liberty is a symbol of freedom. It holds a torch in one hand and a tablet in the other. The tablet has the date July 4, 1776, which is the day the United States became independent. Visitors can take a ferry to Liberty Island and climb up to the statue’s crown. The crown has 25 windows, and from there, people can see a great view of New York City. There are also 354 steps to the top. The statue is very tall—93 meters (305 feet) high. When the statue was first built, some people did not like it. They thought it was too expensive.
