Warm – up

(5 minutes)

Game -T divides the class into 4 groups. T shows 8 pictures of some popular contest. -T gives Ss 30 seconds to identify the names of the contests and memorize them. -T asks each group to nominate representatives to go to the board – one by one – to write as many names of the contests as possible. -The group that gives the most correct names of the contests will be the winner. -T checks and leads in the new lessons.

Pre – reading

(8 minutes)

Matching -T asks Ss to work in pairs to match each of the pictures with the words in the box. -T goes around the class and helps Ss to do the task. -T asks Ss to exhange their results. -T give feedback and correct answer * Suggested answers: • Sao Mai Televison Singing Contest – Picture c • Quiz: “Road to Mount Olympia” – Picture a • Olympic Games – Picture d • London Marathon – Picture b -T elicits or pre-teaches some new words. Task 1 – Matching the words with their definitions -T asks Ss to work in pairs and do Task 1. -T asks Ss to find out the Vietnamese equivalent to the expressions and exchange the ideas with a partner. -T tells Ss to compare their answers with each other. -T gives feedback and correct answers.

Task 2 – Answering questions -T has Ss work in pairs to do Task 2. -T gives Ss time to read the whole passage. -T goes around the class and provides help if necessary. -T calls on some pairs to act out the activity in front of the class. -T comments and gives the suggested answers. * Suggested answers: 1. The representatives of three classes of the (writer’s) school took part in the annual final English Competition last Saturday. 2. Its aim was to stimulate the spirit of learning Enlish among students. 3. The Student’s Parents Society sponsored the competition. (To be continued)

Task 3 – Sentence completion -T requires Ss to read paragraph 3 again and complete the sentences individually. -T tells Ss to compare their answers with their partners. -T goes around the class and provides help if necessary. -T calls on some Ss to read aloud their sentences in front of the class. -T makes corrections if necessary. * Suggested answers: 1. In Activity 5, hung was unable to recite / complete the peom (because he could not remember the last sentence). 2. Having achieved the highest socre, Group B became the winner of the competition. 3. Group C lost the game. They just got 60 points. 4. Nga encouraged her group by saying that for her the most importatn thing had been their participation in the competition and the enjoyment they had had from it.

Post – reading

(8 minutes)

Translation -T has Ss work in groups to read the poem and translate it into Vietnamese. -T goes around class and helps Ss if necessary. -T calls on some groups’ representatives to give their translation. -T asks other Ss to give their remarks. -T gives feedback.
